S. Calhoun Smith was one of the most talented artists & model plane builders and designers who ever lived. He was a fighter pilot in World War II and turned that interest in aviation to model planes of all types and venues as he settled into a civilian career as an illustrator and designer. He died from a heart attack while still very young and our hobby was never the same without his prolific design work.
This scale
SOPWITH PUP
is a truly stable RC design. With a 48" wing span, it was considered a "giant" flying model when it came out in Model Builders Handbook. The original model that Cal is holding was a
single channel
,
rudder-only
, super stable scale model powered with a K & B .19 glow engine. Adding elevator controls should be easy.
Since it was flown successfully in the earliest days of RC models, it will be a very successful model today with 3 or 4-channel RC setups.

. It is extremely complete in helping the scratch-builder have a successful experience throughout. The plans are quite large and come in two complete sections. I show the full-size plans with a yardstick over them to make that point.
